I’m on a short dive trip with a friend, diving the Blue Heron Bridge off Phil Foster Park by West Palm Beach, Florida. It is the least glamorous dive spot, literally under a bridge; not a cool suspension bridge, a flyover. But somehow through some magic some of the coolest critters show up here. I’ve seen some truly amazing things here, today was not one of those days.

The day started out with great weather, bright sunny skies. But it started raining the moment we set foot in the water. Rain under water looks really neat but nothing else looks neat when you have no light.

But with the rain it wasn’t that pretty, the visibility was poor, we found nothing in the grass or anything we hadn’t seen a bunch before. I also experienced equipment issues because my secondary air supply which is also my Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) inflator started free-flowing after just having been serviced this week.

Here’s where I admit that I’ve become a bit of a snob; unless I see something that is truly rare (to me) then it feels like I saw nothing. So basically, if it’s not a seahorse, octopus, batfish, or something equally wild it doesn’t feel successful. I totally understand people catching Pokemon. Do birders get this way too?

Sometimes it takes a bit longer than I like for me to realize that I get to choose: I got to dive today and that makes today a great day. I saw a lot of wonderful fish, crabs, eels, even a stone fish and the dive shop was so great they will service my gear again and gave me a free rental so I could dive again tomorrow. Diving is awesome and any day I get to hangout underwater with my eel friend here is a great day that I’m grateful for.
