I freaking LOVE keyboard shortcuts because I’m lazy they’re so efficient and a little effort to build muscle memory pays off big time… until it doesn’t!

I learned computing on Windows so I learned the basic text cut, copy, paste and ctrl+arrows to move words at a time, adding shift to select text, closing tabs and windows, etc. But that was not super helpful when I started using the command line, in fact using those shortcuts made “bad” things happen. This got even worse when I had to use vi.

Over time I’ve really come to like using the terminal and learned a few basic readline shortcuts and while I wouldn’t say I’m proficient, I rarely use the arrow keys. I’ve also come to really like vim-style modal editing but haven’t fully embraced the philosophy since I edit while I type like a heathen. I also use emacs but with evil-mode but while I’m in insert mode all those nifty readline shortcuts work nicely, except when they don’t.

So, you’re starting the see the problem, I live across multiple paradigms and cause myself immeasurable grief because I have not committed to a single truth. This is made even worse because I still have to use Windows for work. My poor fingers don’t know what to do. I admit that most of this is a problem of my own making.

BUT, I take no responsibility for CTRL+W, like who the heck thought that it should do wildly different things in different contexts, especially closing tabs and windows! WHYYY??? I have searched the interwebs and I have not found a satisfactory answer (leaving aside the fact that search now sucks). I’d love to know if anyone knows the real answer. But if I’m being honest, I don’t think any answer will be satisfactory anyway since this is just crazy.

I’m done, I’m not using C-w anymore, the C stands for cursed, I’m out!
